Clara Doherty Dockter Obituary

Clara Lenore Kaufmann Doherty Dockter, age 97, passed away with several members of her family beside her, on February 19, 2019 at Life Center in Lewiston ID.  She was born August 2, 1921, in Lewiston, ID to Clara Gertrude Forsmann of Cottonwood Flats, ID. & Frank Ferdinand Kaufmann of Green Springs, IL.  She was 1 of 13 children.

She left home at age 14 to work for the Leavitt family in Genesee where she graduated from Genesee High School before marriage to Cornelius Patrick Doherty in 1942.  He predeceased her in 2002. She married Theodore Dockter, in 1993, he predeceased her in 2003. 

She is survived by 4 sons and 5 daughters-in-law; Jaren (Nancy) New Bern, NC, Greg (Janette), St. Marie’s, ID, Vincent (Janis) Mesquite NV, Patrick (Camille), Juliaetta, ID and Janice Doherty of Troy ID, widow of her son, Michael who predeceased her in 2015.  She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren & 3 great-great grandchildren; brother, Cornelius Kaufmann, Lewiston ID, sister, Esther Woodard, Spokane WA, and a number of nieces & nephews. 

She worked for the telephone company and took in ironing.  She provided daycare in her home from 1969-1985.  She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow, ID. Was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Was a member of the Moscow Eagles and Moose Lodge.  Actively involved in founding of the Moscow Senior Center and worked as the cook. Read to seniors in the nursing home, also took them for outings. When Theodore lost his sight, she started a support group for the vision impaired.  Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, canning, and she remained active in the senior center until April 2018.

After moving to Life Care Center in Lewiston, continued to be involved and was adored by the staff.  Clara was a friend to many, providing support and kindness to everyone she met. Instead of mourning our loss, we will gather to celebrate her life that was full of loving family, friends and memories.  “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday February 27, 2019 at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow.
