Wilma Smith Obituary

Wilma J. (Hodge) Smith

Wilma (Willie) Smith, 90, was born in Potlatch, Idaho on August 7, 1928 to Shelley (Calvin) and Alice Hodge.  She passed away at Aspen Park Health Care in Moscow on May 12, 2019.

The family lived and farmed three miles west of Potlatch.  She fondly remembered riding a horse to school before the arrival of school buses.  She was the third of four children in the family, Lois, Zelva, Wilma and Don. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband Wes, her parents and sisters Lois and Zelva.  Don and his wife Geri survive her and live at Frederick, Maryland.

Wilma met Dale Wesley (Wes) Smith and they were married August 11, 1948 in Moscow. They enjoyed the family cabin at Rocky Point water skiing and swimming.  They were married for 63 years prior to his death in September 2011.

She enjoyed the outdoors and playing golf with the U of I Ladies League.  They followed Idaho Vandal football for many years.  Their special joy was dancing with their many friends in their later years at Winchester and in the Lewis Clark valley with Swede Olson on the keyboard.

Wilma attended school at Potlatch graduating in 1946.  She graduated from the University of Idaho in 1958.  She taught 4th grade at Moscow’s Lena Whitmore School from 1959 to 1970 and had many great memories of her “kids”.

We are forever thankful for the wonderful care given by the nurses and staff at Aspen Park.  We also are thankful for the care and attention given by Debra.  Linda and Dave will always remember Wil’s sweet disposition in seeing to her needs since Wes passed away.

At her request there will be no services.  Cremation has taken place and her remains will rejoin Wes near the lake at Rocky Point at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to Humane Society of the Palouse, 2019 Ease White Ave., Moscow, ID 83843.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Short’s Funeral Chapel, Moscow, and online condolences may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.
