Ann Sherrill Richarz

Ann Sherrill Hay Richarz of Moscow passed away on February 21, 2017, in Pullman, Washington. She was 89. She was born on September 26, 1927, in Lubbock, Texas. Raised in the tiny Panhandle town of Sudan, Texas, she enjoyed a childhood that included riding her beloved palomino Concho across the open prairie with her sister and friends. After graduating from high school at 16, she attended Trinity University in San Antonio where she met Will Richarz. They married in 1948 and remained so until his passing in 2005. Will was in the Air Force so the family moved frequently until coming to Moscow in 1968. She started teaching early childhood education at WSU, earning her doctorate at the University of Idaho before her 50th birthday. She continued teaching at WSU for 27 years, receiving many awards and touching the lives of thousands of students. After retiring she remained active in her church and as a volunteer at the hospital, Meals on Wheels and many others. She was preceded in death by her parents Simon Delagneau and Laura Sherrill (Caton) Hay, her sister Paulette Hay Ryan, her son-in-law Sid Bailey and her beloved husband Will in 2005. She is survived by her daughters Melinda, Charisse and Laura, son Sean, granddaughter Sherrill Simone and son-in-law Tom. Her warmth, humor and generosity will by missed by all those who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Moscow, Saturday, February 25, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Sherrill Richarz Scholarship Fund at Washington State University.
