Demaris Childers

DeMaris K. Childers, a longtime Moscow resident, died Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Syringa General Hospital in Grangeville. She was 74. DeMaris was born February 26, 1941 at Potlatch to Alvin L. and Dorothy Parnell Carscallen. She grew up and attended school there and was a member of the Potlatch Riding Club, graduating from Potlatch High School. She was a rodeo princess in the 1958 Lewiston Roundup. She and Charles D. "Don" Childers were married in Coeur d'Alene on May 28, 1960. They made their home in Moscow where DeMaris worked as an operator for General Telephone and Electronics (GTE). She later worked as a bookkeeper for the Johnson News Agency and for a time as a bartender at Schierman's Slurp & Burp in Moscow. DeMaris then went to work at Tidyman's Grocery Store, first as a checker and later as bookkeeper, retiring from there in 1999. She moved to Kooskia where she's lived since. DeMaris enjoyed the outdoors, camping, horse pack trips, four-wheeling, sewing and travel. She will be remembered as a people person and one who shared her opinion. Don preceded her in death in September of 1993. Surviving are her children, Kevin (Cindy) Childers in Kooskia, Craig Childers in Coeur d'Alene, Carmen (Mel) Miller of Moscow and Carla (Nick) Williams of Seattle. She also leaves eight grandchildren, April, Kayla, Lacey, Clayton, Michelle, Justin, Payton and Cruz as well as 6 great grandchildren and a step-brother, Darrell (Joy) Kibbee in Idaho Falls, ID In addition to her husband, Don, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Carscallen. The family suggests memorials be made to the Animal Ark in Grangeville or to a charity of choice. The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 17, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Short's Funeral Chapel with Pastor Kathy L. Kramer officiating. Burial will be at the Moscow Cemetery and a reception will follow at Schierman's Event Center, 3225 Robinson Park Road, Moscow.
