Donald R. Weisenstein

Donald Richard Weisenstein, 92, of Moscow passed away peacefully in his home on December 28, 2015. Don was raised in Butler, PA. During World War II, Don served in the U.S. Navy for three years, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant, j.g. and was assigned to a destroyer escort, in the Pacific, operating with the fleet of Admiral Halsey. Following World War II, Don attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA and Harvard Business School, where he received a M.B.A. degree. Don married Gladyne Carfagna from Turtle Creek, PA on January 1, 1949. Don worked for the RCA Corporation for thirty-six years, and held the position of executive vice-president in marketing. Don retired from RCA in 1987 and he and Dyne moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where they lived for eighteen years. They moved to Moscow, ID in 2005. Don and Dyne had two children, son Jay, living in Chapel Hill, NC and daughter Lisa, living in Moscow, ID. "Papa Don" is the beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather of his family. Gathering all of his family for food and drink was his greatest pleasure. Papa Don took pride in the academic, musical and athletic accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. The love and support he gave all his children and grandchildren is a value that endures. Don lived the final years of his life with Dyne, at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow. The family wishes to thank them for their great care and fondness. Don was preceded in death by his parents Bert and Irene Weisenstein and his sister Doris Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Gladyne Weisenstein of Moscow, ID. He is also survived by his brother, Dale Weisenstein of Pittsburgh, PA.; his children, Jay Weisenstein of Chapel Hill, NC and Lisa Garrett of Moscow, ID; three grandchildren, Danny Garrett of Seattle, WA., BJ Garrett of Washington, DC, and Nick Garrett of Miami, FL; and his great-grandchildren Kinley and James Garrett of Washington, DC., and JoLynn Garrett of Miami, FL. The University of Idaho Arboretum and Botanical Garden was a special place for Don, where he often took long walks with Dyne. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to: Don Weisenstein Memorial Fund, Gift Receipts Office, University of Idaho, 875 Perimeter Drive MS 3147, Moscow, ID 83843. A memorial service is planned for early spring at the University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill, NC.
