Elly Strohm

Elly J. Strohm, a former Troy and Moscow resident, died Monday, July 27, 2015 at Whitman Senior Living Center in Pullman. She was 89. Elly was born June 3, 1926 at Council Bluffs, Iowa to William and Augusta Mathiasen. In 1936 the family moved to Mississippi and Elly graduated from Moss Point High School. She attended Business College, and went to work in the office of Westinghouse in San Francisco where they made parts for the War Effort. She then lived in Alabama for a time and was married to Alva G. Strohm in Tacoma on December 9, 1946. They settled in Troy in 1955 to the Strohm family farm. In 1967 they moved to Moscow and Elly went to work cooking at the Varsity Café and in 1969, the Nobby Inn, retiring from there in 1988. Elly enjoyed flower gardening, playing bingo, and feeding the squirrels and birds, enjoyed butterflies and her cats. Mr. Strohm died in 1971. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Cann in 1977 as well as a brother, Leo Mathiesen in 2011. Surviving is her daughter, Julie (Ralph) Heath of Troy, grandchildren, Todd (Joni) Heath, Tiffany (Tim) DeMeerleer and Jacob (Autumn) Cann and great grandchildren, Jilian Heath, Boden DeMeerleer and Elly M. Cann. The funeral service will be held Monday, August 3rd at 2:00 PM at Short's Funeral Chapel with Barrie Steele officiating. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery and a potluck reception will be at the 1912 Center afterward. The family suggests memorials to the Troy Fire Department or to the Humane Society of the Palouse.
