On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, long time Moscow resident Evelyn C. Grassl joined her loved ones who have passed on before her. Evelyn was born May 9, 1929, in Chewelah Washington to Conrad and Emma Bosse. At the age of 10, she moved to a farm in Moscow along with her family of five brothers, Clarence, Richard, James, Leonard, and Leo and three sisters, Bernadine, Regina, and Eleanor.
Growing up a farm girl, Evelyn helped with farm chores cooking three big meals a day for family and farm hands, helping with the harvest, milking the cows, canning fruits and vegetables from the orchards and gardens. She attended the Ursuline Academy in Moscow. It was Evelyn’s senior year in the academy when she went to a dance with one “beau” and came home with another “beau” Harold Grassl. Evelyn knew it was love at first sight. She married Harold six months later, November 3, 1948, in St Mary’s Catholic Church, Moscow Idaho.
Harold and Evelyn were devoted to each other and shared a love of fishing, camping, bowling, and travel. Their many adventures led them to meeting new friends, and seeing a lot of country. Pinochle parties were the activity in the winter months and they had a lot of them!
Evelyn, along with her best friend and twin sister, Eleanor, worked at the Farmer’s Club, Daily Idahonian, and later purchased and managed Jaclyn’s Children’s and Maternity Wear in Moscow. The “twins” would often dress alike, and several times confused family, friends, and customers as to who they were talking to! And, they were always committed to providing excellent service to their customers.
Although Evelyn worked outside the home, she found time to crochet an afghan for each of her daughters and grandchildren, in which they received upon graduation from high school. She also crocheted hundreds of dish cloths as a fund raiser for the Good Sam Camper Club, in which Harold and Evelyn were members for several years. Evelyn was an active member in the Moose Lodge since 1949 and reached one of the highest honors, Senior Regent. She was also active on a bowling team for 30 years, and a long-time member of the Catholic Women’s League. She was a fabulous cook/baker and made numerous pies and several covered dishes for many of St Mary’s sausage feeds and funeral dinners. As busy as she was, she always had time to watch the Mariners and Gonzaga teams play!
She is survived by her two daughters Marilyn (Gary) Pope of Moscow and Debbie (Lyle) Jensen of Asotin, her five grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, plus several nieces and nephews. Her husband of 75 years passed in 2023.
The Rosary will be recited at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 618 East First, Moscow Idaho at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025 with Funeral Mass following at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at the Moscow Cemetery following mass and a reception at the St. Mary’s Parish Center.
We are deeply grateful to the staff of Paradise Creek of Olympus Retirement Center, Moscow, and the staff of Elite Home Health and Hospice of Clarkston for the care, kindness, and love shown for our mom. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St Mary’s Catholic Church, Moscow or a non-profit organization of your choice.
