Florence R. Lyle Haynes

March 27, 1919 — July 29, 2015

Florence Ruth (Butterfield) Lyle- Haynes, daughter of Ben and Bessie Butterfield, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at Avalon Care Center in Pullman. She was 96. She was born March 27, 1919 in Prosser, WA. The family lived at LaCrosse, WA during her school years. She was an outstanding basketball player in school, graduating in 1938, and then moving to Pullman. Florence and Robert L. Lyle were married in Pullman on September 14, 1942. They had a wonderful life partnership on the farm nine miles from Pullman. Florence was a homemaker who helped her husband in every way, including cooking for the hired men. They raised sheep that were taken into the mountains each year for green pastures. Florence packed up food for the months they would be there, cooked terrific meals on an old wood-burning stove, and then helped trail the sheep back home to the farm. She never complained! Florence was a 70 year member of Ewartsville Grange, receiving many awards for cooking and sewing. She was an honorary member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, served as President of the Wool Growers Auxiliary and a longtime member of the West Country Club. She worked wherever she was needed as a volunteer. She went to work at WSU Bookstore just as extra "holiday help", and ended up working full time for 15 years. She also worked part time at Myklebust Clothing Store. Mr. Lyle preceded her in death in October of 1989. She and Abe Haynes were married in Colfax on July 8, 1991. They traveled and enjoyed life at their "get-away" place in Enterprise, OR. They loved the outdoors and were avid auction attendees, and being "good bidders", always had front row seats. Abe also preceded her in death on January 21, 2013. Florence had many friends, both young and older. She took great pride in her perfectly clean home and her personal appearance. She loved to entertain and all visitors had to join her at a table set with crystal and china to enjoy dessert and coffee. The biggest joy was being with her six grandsons, their spouses and great grandchildren. The family get together's were a highlight in life. In addition to her husbands, Robert and Abe, a sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Harvey Reiber, brothers, Ray, Ben and John Butterfield all predeceased her. She is survived by her son, and daughter-in-law, James R. and Bonnie Lyle in Colfax, her grandsons and wives, Larry J. (Carrie); Chris J. (Julie); Scott J. (Laura); Robert J. (Leta), Keith J. (Amber); and Matthew J. (Kate). She also leaves 14 great grandchildren. She will be laid to rest next to Abe and near Bob at the Pullman Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Pullman Child Welfare, or an organization of your choice.
