George F. Canney

George Canney, 81, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024, at his home in Moscow, Idaho.

Born in Seattle on March 10, 1943, to George and Honey Canney, George grew up with a passion for learning and faith. He graduated from University of California Berkeley, earned a master’s degree in Psychology from San Jose State University, and a master’s and doctorate in Education from the University of Minnesota. George taught for four years at the University of Illinois before moving to Moscow to teach at the University of Idaho, where he taught for 29 years, inspiring countless students.  He retired in 2007 as a Professor Emeritus. George also served as a dedicated Deacon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.  He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America for his distinguished service and support of our community’s youth. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Caroline, and their five children, Shawn, Tracy, Ryan, Nathan, and Fred. He was a proud grandfather to twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild. George had a passion for woodworking, was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and was known for his kind and generous spirit. Viewing will be held Friday July 12, from 12-4 pm at Short’s Funeral Chapel. A vigil service will be held Friday, July 12, at 7pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and the funeral mass and celebration of life will be at 10am on Saturday, July 13, also at St. Mary’s. Since George loved a variety of foods to eat, we are having a potluck reception at St. Mary’s will follow the graveside service, so bring your favorite dish to share.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the George and Caroline Canney Scholarship Fund at the University of Idaho, to St. Vincent de Paul or to a charity of your choice. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered support and condolences during this difficult time.
