Harold Steven Smith died of cancer in Moscow, ID, on November 3rd, 2026. He was born to Roger and Muriel Smith in Moscow, ID, and he resided on the family property his entire life, graduating from Moscow High School.
Harold worked at Carter’s Arco Station while in high school, for the City of Moscow Water Works, and Anderson-Berger Toyota. Harold owned and operated Country Homes Mobile Park in Moscow until his retirement in 2020. Harold served in the US Army National Guard in Moscow for 11 years.
Harold is survived by his wife Valerie Vaughn Smith, and sons Kelly Smith of Dallas, OR, Paul Smith of Las Cruces, NM, step-son Dana Tompkins of Moscow, ID; grandchildren Logan Tompkins and Mariah Tompkins of Moscow, ID; a sister Linda Smith Strong of Moscow, ID; and Alison Breckon.
Harold’s interests involved many years of building street rod cars and attending car shows. He built a 1941 Willys Coupe and a 1940 Chevrolet Coupe from the ground up which won many awards. He was a mechanic mentor to Logan working on cars in the shop which was the highlight of his days. We called him “a jack of all trades” as he knew how to do any project and fabricate tools if needed. Harold was liked by everyone he met and deeply loved by his family. Harold enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and his dog Bella. Harold and Valerie took many trips to Oregon and Montana in the RV to see family and the country.
The family expresses appreciation to Paradise Creek Health and Rehabilitation of Cascadia in Moscow, ID for their care for Harold over the past 12 months. Also our appreciation to Elite Home Health and Hospice.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
