Helen Davis Hill

January 21, 1926 — September 20, 2014

Helen Davis Hill, 88, of Moscow, Idaho passed away with family by her side on September 20, 2014 at Gritman Medical Center. Helen was born to Roxie Leole Thomason Davis and Charles Eugene Davis on January 21, 1926 in Meridian, Idaho. She grew up in Emmett, Idaho graduating there in 1944. She was very active in school and was a drummer in the high school marching band, and an Apple Blossom Princess. Shortly after graduating, Helen wed her high school sweetheart, Calvin Wayne Hill on December 20, 1944 in Alameda, California. They then moved to Astoria, Oregon where their daughter, Sue was born in 1945. After a short time in Astoria, and following Wayne's discharge from the Navy, they moved to Farragut, Idaho. In 1948 Helen and Wayne moved to Moscow, Idaho, and their son Michael was born in 1950. They remained in Moscow the majority of their married life, with the exception of a few years spent in Hawaii. They were married 58 years until Wayne's passing in 2002, at which time Helen made her home at Good Samaritan Village until her death. Helen held a variety of jobs during her years in Moscow, and was one of the first employees during the inception of the Appaloosa Horse Club. She also worked at the University of Idaho and the Latah County Health Department, before completing a 31 year career in the Pre-Med/Nursing department at Washington State University. After her retirement in 1991, she found great joy working with her friends, part time at Creighton's Department Store in Moscow. She was one of the best dressed ladies in town. When Helen wasn't working, she could be found gardening, cooking, fishing on the St. Joe River with family or serving her church. She was a 60 year member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and served fervently in many capacities. One of her greatest joys was helping to organize several of the last traditional smorgasbords at the church. Helen was also a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, Eastern Star and was a Job's Daughter Guardian. Helen was proceeded in death by the love of her life, Wayne, her parents Roxie and Charles Davis, brothers, Merle, Eben, Rue, and Gale and her sister Gen. She is survived by her children; daughter Sue Hill Smith and husband Rod, son Mike Hill and wife Beth, grandchildren Cindy Schneider (Chris), David Hill (Courtney), Raimi Amsbury (Nick), and Dylan Hill (Madison). Helen also had 7 great grandchildren that she adored; Jack and Kate Schneider, Lia, Grace and Abby Hill, Landon Hill and Melia Amsbury. The family would like to thank her special care givers at Good Samaritan Village, and the med surge nurses and attending physicians at Gritman Medical Center for their kind and compassionate care during Helen's final days. Memorial gifts may be given in Helen's name to the 'kitchen remodel project' at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1036 West A, Moscow, Idaho 83843, or the charity of your choice. At Helen's request there will not be a memorial service. A private family interment for Wayne and Helen will take place in October at the Moscow Cemetery, with Pastor Gordon Braun officiating. Short's Funeral Home has been entrusted with Helen's final arrangements and online condolences may be sent to wwwshortsfuneralchapel.net.
