Jean Van Dyke

Jean Knapik Van Dyke of Deary died Friday, July 8th at Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene. She was 81. Jean was born May 8, 1935 in Moscow to Frank and Clara C. Hobel Knapik. She grew up and attended Moscow schools, graduating from Moscow High. She and Jerry Van Dyke were married in Moscow on December 3, 1953. They made their home in Moscow where Jean was a homemaker, raising her family while Jerry farmed and later worked for the railroad. The family lived in Pullman from 1961 until 1986 when they moved to Deary. Jean enjoyed horseback riding in her younger years and had horses all of her life. She enjoyed camping and cleaned houses for others. Jean was a member of the Sisters of Eagles and the Morningstar Rebecca Lodge. She was an active volunteer for many years for the Adventist Community Service Center in Deary as well as the Deary Community Center. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Jerry, at their Deary home, her children, Wayne in Texas, Chris (Karen) in Helena, MT, Jeff (Tammy) in Garfield, WA, Dennis in Helena, MT and John in Arizona. She also leaves 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, a sister, Dorothy Heustis of Deary and brothers, Skip in Kennewick and Dave of Moscow. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bill. At her request, there will be no formal service. The family suggests memorials be made to the Deary Fire and Ambulance Fund or to a charity of choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Short's Funeral Chapel, Moscow, and online condolences may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.
