Jim Sprenger

Jim Sprenger of Lewiston and a longtime Moscow resident, died Friday, March 3, 2017 at Gritman Medical Center. He was 84. Jim was born July 13, 1932 in Genesee to Joseph M. and Jessie B. Kane Sprenger. He grew up with his brother, Joe, Jr., on the family farm and graduated from Genesee High School in 1951. Jim joined the US Air Force, serving in Okinawa, Japan. Following his discharge, he returned to the area and married Jackie Marie Berger in Genesee in 1957. They had and raised three "spectacular" children, Cindie, Brenda and Mike. After 27 years of marriage they were divorced. At an early age, Jim began working with his father at Sprenger Construction. After Joe's retirement, the company changed to Sprenger and Son in 1984 when Mike joined the company. Jim was always active in his community. He was involved with the Moscow Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving as president, Jim refereed basketball for over 25 years and was inducted into the Idaho Referee Hall of Fame. He was active in the Idaho Quarter Horse Association, serving as president. He judged various horse shows including the Lewiston Roundup and traveled for many years participating in horse shows throughout the United States, winning numerous awards. Jim also enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, golf, dancing was an avid trap shooter, was active in the Vandal Boosters and rarely missed his grandchildren's sporting events. Surviving are his children, Cindie (Jerry) Eikum of Lewiston, Brenda (Tom) Gamble of Spokane and Mike (Linda) Sprenger of Moscow. They also helped raise a niece, Debi Sprenger Boller. Jim also leaves 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Jim was also preceded in death by his brother Joe in 1993. Viewing will be at Short's Funeral Chapel on Wednesday and Thursday. A private graveside service for the family will be Friday, followed by a Celebration of Life at the University Inn Best Western Convention Center. A program and speakers will begin at 3:00 PM.
