Joan F. Stout

Joan F. Stout was born in Moscow, Idaho on Feb. 15, 1940. The daughter of Elvon and Betty Hampton. Joan attended school and graduated from Genesee High School. Music has always been a big part of Joan's life. Joan attended summer music camps at the University of Idaho in Jr. High and High School. She performed solos every year for competition at music festival in Lewiston. She was also a member of the Future Homemakers of America, and student body treasurer. Joan attended the University of Idaho and was a member of Vandaleers, majoring in vocal, piano and organ. She then taught piano and voice privately for 45 years. She played and sang for many weddings and funerals during that time. Joan also preformed solo work in cantatas and sang in the Washington-Idaho Symphony Chorus. Joan spent her growing years at the Hampton Ranch east of Genesee, and lived in the original house there until the new house was built in 1949. She was baptized in the Genesee Community Church and was a member of Chi Rho and CYF. Joan and Martin started their life together in Junction City, Kansas in September 1957 where Martin was in the Army. Once they were home they started farming, raising cattle, pigs and chickens. Joan had 250 laying hens from which she gathered eggs, processed and sold them to the local Rice's Market. They later increased their herd to include Charolais cattle. Besides helping to raise all of the animals Joan tended to a large garden that provided the years' worth of vegetables for canning and freezing. Joan's civic interests were many as she was a founding member of the Genesee Jaycettes, serving as president and being in charge of Community Days Bar-B-Que several years when the Jaycees and Jaycettes were in charge. She bowled in a local league in the basement of the senior center, (then the legion building). Joan was a member of Lily Chapter #27 Order of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron more than once and holding many of the lodge offices. In 1968 she was chosen one of 50 Outstanding Young Women in the U.S. In 1973 Joan was appointed to the Farmers Home Administration board of directors for a 3 year term, in Nez Perce County, the first woman in the State of Idaho to serve on that board. She again served on that board in 1990's. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, playing cards, antique hunting, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Several times she was the featured cook in the Lewiston Morning Tribune; and was a consultant for a cook book published by the Peppermill in Moscow. In the early 2000's she had a business of making and selling dried flower arrangements and an Amway business. She and Martin also had a candy machine business for a few years. Joan has always been the book-keeper for their farm and ranch. She was a member of Genesee Quilters for a few years and a long-time member of the Nez Perce County Cattlewomen where she served as President more than once. Joan was preceded in death by her parents Elvon and Betty Hampton. She is survived by two brothers, Wade Hampton and wife Lin of Genesee and Mark Hampton and wife Anne of Yakima. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Martin, at their Genesee home. Joan has a wonderful family; sons Dan Stout and wife Cindy of Genesee, Darrell Stout and wife Kim of Genesee, and Doug Stout and wife Tammy of Genesee. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Brad, Stacey, Wyatt, Rhett, Trevor and Makenzie; five great-grandchildren Tyler, Coy, Kami, Bailey and Riley; and one great-great grandchild Kennedi. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday October 13th, 11:00 am at the Genesee Community Church, with a lunch following at the Genesee Fire Hall. A private burial will precede the memorial at the Genesee City Cemetery. Memorials can be given in Joan's name to the Genesee Ambulance Fund or the Genesee Community Church.
