Farrol Joan “Joni” Nunan passed away at the age of 91 on Saturday, September 19, 2026 in Meridian, Idaho.
Joni was born on November 10, 1934, in Centerville, Tennessee. Her family then moved to Oklahoma before settling in Orofino, Idaho, where she graduated from Orofino High School. After high school, Joni earned a degree in education at the University of Idaho. The day after she graduated from college, she married Patrick J. Nunan.
Joni taught school in Potlatch and Grangeville, Idaho, for a few years before she and Pat started their family. They lived in Grangeville, Lewiston, and Moscow before settling in Troy, Idaho, where they raised their four children – Mary, Michael, Monica and Mark.
Joni loved the community of Troy and was active in many organizations and activities there, including the ECD Club, the Birthday Club, PEO, the Bethel Club, and in later years the Over the Hill travel group.
Along with her husband, Joni was an avid fan of Troy High School and University of Idaho athletics. She rarely missed a basketball or football game and she played the piccolo in the University of Idaho alumni band. As a University of Idaho Vandal booster, she welcomed several athletes into her family, sharing dinners, holidays, and camping trips. Her generosity and willingness to make others feel welcome were among the many qualities that made her so special.
Above all, family was the most important part of Joni’s life. She treasured her grandchildren and great grandchildren and could often be found cheering them on at baseball, soccer, basketball, and football games. She was also very active as a parent of her children in 4-H and FFA, driving kids to activities in various states and helping to get farm animals to the Latah County Fair.
Joni and Pat enjoyed wintering in Arizona with friends. Their travel with family and friends took them to England, Ireland, Mexico, Hawaii, Yellowstone Park, Disneyland, many other wonderful destinations over the years, creating lasting and treasured memories.
About three and a half years ago, Joni moved to Meridian, Idaho, to live in a retirement community. There, she made new friends and was blessed with wonderful people who cared for and watched over her. Although she embraced her new surroundings, she often made it clear that her heart remained in northern Idaho and that she wanted to return home. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Pat, at Burnt Ridge Cemetery, in her cherished town of Troy, Idaho.
Joni was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick J. Nunan; her father, Fairly John Walrath; her mother, Dorothy Dobson; her stepfather, Vance Dobson; her sisters, Nina Holcomb and Harriet Reece; and her son, Mark Nunan.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Yenney (Mike), her son Michael Nunan (Laurie), and daughter Monica Nunan (Mohsen); her brother, Charles Walrath (Joanne), and her sister, Kathy Dobson Warnock (Mike). She is also survived by her grandchildren Lannie Pedersen (Chelsea), Andrew Yenney (Yain), Grant Yenney (Julia), Wayne Harris, Keegan Pana, and Cameron Pana; and her great grandchildren Hazel, Felix, Lilah, and Ledger.
Joni will be remembered for her love of family and her generosity of spirit in her communities. She will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched in her 91 years.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Troy Lutheran Church on Friday, November 13 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Troy High School Baseball fund or to the Troy Lutheran Church.
The family would like to express our deep appreciation to the care staff at The Pointe at Meridian, who provided excellent care during the last stages of Joni’s life.
