Kenneth G. Whitney, 90 of Troy Kenneth George Whitney was born May 11, 1925, in Potlatch, Idaho to George L. and Selma (Anderson) Whitney. He passed away on October 25, 2015, at his home in Troy. Kenneth was raised in Potlatch, attending school there and working throughout his childhood with his brother Bob Whitney usually at his side. He was called to serve his country during his senior year at Potlatch High School in 1943. He joined the Army Air Corp and was soon became a Staff Sergeant, being sent to England where he served as a Flight Engineer on a B-17, the Lastest Rumor flying over Europe for an extraordinary 35 missions for the 351st Bombardment Squadron, the 100th Bombardment Group and receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery under fire as well as a Silver Star. Kenneth married Beverly Joyce Smith at Potlatch, Idaho, May 21, 1948. The two later settled in Troy, Idaho, buying Troy Motors with Dorwin Anderson. Kenneth worked at Troy Motors until he was 80 when he decided it was time to retire. Working was a way of life for Kenneth, he was never one to set idle for long, if he wasn't serving his community on the city council or as a volunteer fireman, he was with Doc Drury on an ambulance run or a rafting trip. His love of flying continued with him throughout his years, he loved learning, especially about planes. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He was a gun collector and especially enjoyed refurbishing them and telling stories of his youth and adventures to all who would listen. He also enjoyed attending sporting events and activities of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He became a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Deary, being baptized there in 2004. One of Kenneth's proudest moments was receiving his Potlatch High School Diploma, in May of 2002, at the age of 78, the same day that his youngest grandson, Dan Whitney, graduated from Troy High School. Kenneth was known to his grandchildren as "Pap Pap", they were the light of his life. At his death he had 17 great grandchildren, 7 grandchildren, his son Kenny and wife Debbie of Troy and daughter Jackie Marshall and husband Larry of Clarkston. He is also survived by his sisters Darlene Eggers and husband Loren, and Belva Dyer and her husband Paul all of Lewiston and his many nieces and nephews that he held dear to his heart. Kenneth is preceded in death by his wife, Beverly in October of 2008, brothers Delbert, Bob and Gordon, and a sister Shirley. A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Pastor Murray Stanton of Zion Lutheran Church, Deary, will officiate and a reception and time of fellowship will follow.
