Lila M. Smith, a longtime Troy resident, died peacefully at her home on Burnt Ridge on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. She was 78. Lila Marjorie Smith was born in Seattle, Washington on April 5, 1937. She was born of Magnhild "Marjorie" Sortun and Carl Axel" Leonard" Johnson. After living in the Seattle area, Margie and Leonard divorced. Lila and her mother moved to Kent where they lived with Martin and Olianne (Ramsdale) Sortun, Margies Father and Mother who emigrated from Norway in 1929. Martin and Olianne had twelve other children, Lilas Aunts and Uncles who literally took Lila under their wings and raised her. Her formative years were formed by the love of Herbjorg, Hulda, Tordis, Einar, Klara, Solvieg, Kjellaug, Aslaug, Henrik, Sonia and Al Sortun. They helped Martin, or Besta Far with the raspberries, cows and other livestock he raised to keep his young freshly immigrated family healthy and happy during the depression years. Olliane or Besta helped teach all the children to grow a garden, can, sew and learn English. Margie later married Frank Peterson and they moved to Troy Idaho and had two sons, Frank and Tom and another daughter, Linda. They lived in Ed Ramsdales house on American Ridge and Frank worked for Ed. They bought the Gord place on Lamb Road where Lila finished out high school in Troy. Lila knew Robert Smith throughout her childhood. He graduated from Troy Schools in 1950 and went into the Navy. When he returned home in 1955, they fell in love and he married Lila and they raised three children in Troy, Patrick Laverne, Michael Roy and Lori Ann. Lila was very involved with all of her children's activities from Brownies, Cub Scouts, 4-H, cooking at the school and driving school bus and the swimming bus. After the kids were raised, Robert and Lila moved out to Burnt Ridge and continued to farm and enjoy extended snow bird vacations to Mexico, Hawaii, Arizona and Nevada. Pat married Annette (Smick) and born two talented sons Aaron Kenneth and Jason Patrick, Mike married Dianna (Moe) and have two beautiful daughters, Hannah Michelle and Sylvia Marie. Lori born a wonderful son Robert Dean Smith. Lila is survived by her brothers Frank and Tom Peterson and sister, Linda Tarter, and numerous nieces and nephews, all who she held dear to her heart. Lila is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, mother, Margie Peterson, mother-in-law, Hannah Smith and father-in-law, Slim Smith. Lila's memorial service will be held at Shorts Funeral Chapel on Monday November 2 at 11:00, with Pastor Randall "Nick" Nicolai presiding, with a dinner to follow at the Troy Lutheran Church in Troy. Interment will be held at a later time at Burnt Ridge Cemetery. The family requests all memorials be given in honor of Lila Smith to the Troy Ambulance Fund, Troy Lutheran Church or the charitable organization of your choice.
