Mildred "Joan" Gustaveson

March 19, 1930 — December 16, 2023

Mildred “Joan” (Florence) Gustaveson passed away at Aspen Park of Cascadia on December 16th, 2023. She was 93 years old.

Joan was born to William and Estella Florence at Gritman Hospital on March 19th, 1930. She grew up in the family home with her sister Margaret on the U of I campus by the cattle barns.

She attended elementary school at Russell Elementary where she loved to play marbles on the playground. She graduated from Moscow High School in 1949. She worked at J.C Penny’s while attending college. In 1953 she graduated from the University of Idaho with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She loved watching and supporting Vandal Athletics and loved the Vandal fight song.

On June 15th, 1952 Joan married Howard Gustaveson. They made their home in Viola where they raised their 3 children Daryl and twins Janice and Janna. They moved to Moscow in 1975. Howard and Joan worked for the University of Idaho from 1973 to their retirement in 1988.

Joan loved working outside in her yard tending to all her flowers and yard. If she was not out in her yard, she was watching her beloved Zags or whatever sporting event was on tv at the time. She loved the Vandals, Mariners, and Seahawks. She kept track of all her grandkids and great grandkids sports. She was affectionately known to all her grandkids and great grandkids as Grandma Gus.

Joan is survived by her three children, Daryl (Lauretta) Gustaveson, twin daughters Janna (Dave) Fairley, and Janice (Keith) Becker. Grandkids Dawn Wilkinson, Shanna Gustaveson, Dallas Gustaveson, John Fairley, Jason Fairley, Bryan Becker, and Susie Needham. And 22 great grandchildren.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Howard Gustaveson, her parents William and Estella Florence, her sister Margaret (Paul) Moon, and great grandson Bo Gustaveson.
