Sonia Stedman

June 20, 1942 — October 2, 2017

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Sonia Stedman announces her death which occurred on October 2, 2017. Though she had been battling some health issues this last year, this past weekend she had an unexpected episode that led to her passing. Her daughters and son-in-law, Lana and Todd Unger and Lori Stedman, were able to be with her at Gritman Medical Center for her last days. Sonia Lee Stevenson Stedman was born in Pennsylvania on June 20, 1942 to James and Mary Ann Stevenson. She married Samuel Wesley Stedman in 1962 and they lived in Casa Grande, AZ until Sam died in 1998 after a 10 year battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Soon after, Sonia moved to Moscow, ID to live near her daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Todd Unger, and their three children Addie, Phoebe and Sammie. Sonia's other daughter, Lori Stedman, moved her family from AZ to Moscow in 2011 to be near the family. Sonia spent 15 years teaching Home Economics to middle school children in Casa Grande, AZ. She loved the tough kids she often found in her classes and they loved her too. She had the nickname of "Sarge" with the kids. She was strict but her students knew she loved them and would help them in life situations as well as classroom assignments. Grama Sonia enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren: Cat (Jake) Youngblood, Addie Unger, Ashleigh (Jonathan) Hukill, Lizzie Stedman, Phoebe Unger, Dailene Stedman, Gary Stedman, Sammie Unger, Mark Stedman and Nathan Stedman and great grandchildren: Piper, Zane and Gabriel Youngblood, during her last years. She loved passing on her knowledge of cooking, sewing, quilting and crafting. She was always an ear to listen. She was up for a road trip if someone needed company and enjoyed several trips to Disneyland with her grandchildren. Sonia was also preceded in death by both her parents and her only sibling, Sally Calkins. At her request, the family will not be having a memorial service, but taking the opportunity to celebrate her life privately. Sonia Stedman was full of life and made an impact on anyone that met her. She will be missed.
