Teresa M. "Terry" Knauss

October 8, 1935 — June 16, 2016

Teresa Marie Knauss (80), a longtime Moscow resident, died Thursday, June 16, 2016, of cancer, at her home in Moscow surrounded by her family. Terry was born October 8, 1935 in South Amboy, NJ to Edward and Margaret O'Brien. While attending Seattle University, she met Robert F Helbling. They were married in Seattle in 1957 and later moved to Moscow to raise their family. They were married ten years until his death. In 1973, she married Donald R Knauss. During their 36 years of marriage together, Don and Terry shared in raising children and growing their local businesses. After retiring from Dry Pea & Lentil Commission, she and Don enjoyed spending more time at the cabin they built on Lake Coeur d'Alene, playing cards and traveling. Terry is remembered for her sense of humor and love of life. A caring mother and grandmother, she enjoyed being with family and the many friends she made in her years of involvement at St. Mary's Church and School, the Catholic Women's League, O'Brien St. Patrick's Day Reunions and multiple bridge groups. She loved attending (and bragging about) her grandchildren's many activities. She was a fan of the Seattle Seahawks, UI Vandals, Gonzaga basketball and WSU Cougar Track & Field. She is survived by her children: Bob (Brenda) Helbling of Moscow; Daniel (Valerie) Helbling of Viola; Timothy Helbling of Slidell, LA; Julie (Tim) Taylor of Onaway; and Jeanne (Dave) Poxleitner of Keuterville. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Ryan, Nicole, Katie, Jocelyne, Bryant, David, Allicia, Kelsey and Alex and great grandchild, Easton. Terry is also survived by her brother John O'Brien of Seattle; daughter-in-law Carol Helbling; stepsons Donald Jr. (Chris); Ron (Lori); Robert (Christy), step grandchildren Jennifer, Stacie, Cameron, Cody, and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her brothers Bill, Ed and Jim O'Brien and daughter-in-law Gina (Parsley) Helbling. There will be a viewing at Short's Funeral Chapel on Tuesday from 9 AM to 6 PM. Services will be held on Wednesday, June 22nd at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moscow with recitation of the rosary at 10:15 AM, and a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM concluding with graveside services at Moscow Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the church hall. Online condolences may be left at www.shortsfuneralchapel.net. The family requests that memorials be made to St. Mary's Catholic Women's League or St. Mary's School Foundation.
