William (Bill) Arthur Martling, 101, passed June 30, 2024 at Paradise Creek of Cascadia Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 23, 1923 in East Norwich, Long Island, New York, the son of Arthur Martling and Jeanette (Patterson) Martling.
Bill graduated from Oyster Bay High School in 1941, then served with the U.S. Army in WWII in the Pacific. After the end of the war, Bill returned home to Long Island where he was a loyal member of the East Norwich Volunteer Fire Department. He met Jean Strevell, they dated for three years and were married on November 4, 1951. They moved to Florida in the mid 1950’s where Bill worked for the City of Ft. Lauderdale until he retired and he and Jean moved to Moscow, Idaho in 1981.
Bill loved camping, taking a month off each summer to travel around America visiting our National Parks, dragging along his five kids and poor long-suffering wife. He also loved gardening and raising chickens – he should have been born a homesteader. He was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need and supported many charities.
Bill is survived by his children, Kathleen Bumgarner, Ellen Jovanovich and her husband Peter, Dan Martling, Paul Martling and his wife Kristen. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Shaylee Martling, Jason Martling and Morgan Daniels. Bill joins Jean and their daughter, Karen Martling, who preceded him in death.
At Bill’s request, there will be no service. He will be laid to rest beside his wife at the Moscow Cemetery. Memorials in Bill’s name may be made to the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department, 229 Pintail Lane, Moscow, ID 83843.
