Betty Westergreen Obituary

Betty Lou Westergreen of Moscow was called back to heaven on Saturday, June 15, 2019. She passed in her sleep at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. She was 91.

Betty was born April 5, 1928 in Ferdinand, Idaho to Conrad and Helen Behler Mengelkamp. The family moved to Moscow when she was very young. She had many fond memories of growing up on her family’s farm, along with her five siblings. She attended Moscow schools, graduating from Moscow High School.

In her teen years Betty met a charming young man on the school bus, Leonard A. Westergreen. They were later married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moscow on February 10, 1948. The couple made their home in Moscow where they raised two sons, Jay and Leo.

Betty was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and traveling usually alongside Leonard seeing the world and visiting family. They were also part of the Northwest Traveler’s chapter of The Good Sam’s RV Club. Betty would regularly join her sisters and nieces on the fun bus to Winnemucca. What Betty loved most of all was her family. She was very close and involved in her nieces and nephews lives. Betty embodied the love of Christ as she was so very generous and considerate, always willing to give love and support to anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 40 years, Leonard, son Jay, daughter-in-law Nancy as well as a sister, Jean Stokes and a brother, Joe Mengelkamp.

Surviving are her son Leo and wife Johnnie Westergreen of Everett, WA, 11 Grandchildren - Aram (Angela), Ashlynn (Kyle), Amberly (Levi), Justin, Jordan, Austin, Camden, Gunnar, Isabella, Maddox, Zane; 3 Great Grandchildren - Nash, Nova and baby arriving this summer; brother Jim Mengelkamp of Moscow and sisters, Viola Love of Spokane and Helen Sacht of Boise, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 24th at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moscow. A rosary will be recited at 10:30. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery and a luncheon will be served at St. Mary’s Family Center afterward.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Moscow Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Fund.
