John Porter Obituary

John F. Porter started his journey on Christmas day in 1942 where he grew up on a farm in Caldwell just outside Boise. He had an even temperament and a love of knowledge. As a teen he enjoyed wrestling and earned the degree of Eagle scout. He was a natural teacher and enjoyed sharing his wisdom. In college he studied science and education and even taught high school classes for a few years.
In 1969 he married Evelyn, his wife of fifty years. Now retired, she was a nurse and he worked for the State of Idaho Dept. of Welfare. After a few years they had two children, Tara and Michael. He decided to enroll in the University of Idaho Law school and received his Juris Doctor in 1982. He was the public defender for Latah county for a few years before opening his own law practice in Troy.
To say John was an avid reader would be an understatement. His family would often find him reading a book or two before he turned in for the night. Always learning something new, it’s no surprise that he had so many interests and hobbies. He dabbled in blacksmithing, muzzleloaders, leather tooling, gold panning and archery. He collected coins and fountain pens. He had his pilot’s license and a small plane for a while. He had a sailboat in the Clarkston marina where he would enjoy sailing on the weekends. He had horses and would ride with his family around Spring Valley.
He was an engaged member of his community. He donated to local causes and was a member of the Troy Lions Club. If he had any excesses, it was generosity. He was kind, noble, and would often be found wearing a smile and a turquoise bolo tie.
John was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He ended his journey after 76 years surrounded by his family.
