My Dad, John L. Stauffer, fondly known by many as “Stauffer”, passed away on January 8th, 2022 at his home in Troy, ID. He always had a big warm smile, a mischievous chuckle and a sparkle in his eye, if you knew him...you knew that look!
John was born February 22, 1947 to Delmar L Stauffer and Bronika (Tymcio) Stauffer in Great Falls, MT. There he graduated from Great Falls Highschool in 1965, and then served 4 years in the U. S. Navy as a 2nd rank Fire Control Technician, and 2 years in the Navy reserve. After leaving the military, he attended Central Oregon Community College to become an Office Machine Technician, working in this field for 37 years in Moscow, ID, retiring in 2012.
My Dad had a brilliant and wise mind, could build or fix anything; woodworking and engines were a natural for him. You often found him under the hood of a truck, always helping others. He loved sci-fi and haunted houses and nothing was better than good music on the old living room stereo, one of my earliest memories. Many winters were spent snowmobiling with the SnoDrifters of Latah County, summers as a crew member with State Line Outboard Racing Association.
He had a deep love of forests, wildlife, trees, lakes, rivers, the coast and enjoying the outdoors. Camping in the woods with family and friends, a bonfire, tasty food and a cold beverage was a weekend well spent...the more the merrier! Traveling, exploring mountains and old towns, boating and rafting, “mudding” back roads, target shooting, snowmobiling, tube sledding, cross-country skiing, hot springs, meteor and sky events, chasing sunsets and scenic photography were all a part of him. He truly enjoyed living life!
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Jonathan Stauffer of Steamboat Springs, CO. He is survived by his brother Gregory Stauffer of Great Falls, MT; his daughter Sara (Stauffer) Florence, her husband Gerry, and Grandchildren Severin, Keagan and Rowan Florence of Sandpoint, ID; His Daughter-in-Law Toby Stauffer of Steamboat Springs, CO and his Godson Nathan Mulch and wife Colette Maimone of Bowling Green, OH.
My Dad was known and loved by many, and will be missed. He loved his family very much, and genuinely valued good times with family and friends! A Celebration of Life will be held this summer (date to be determined), For updates and sharing memories, email js22sf@gmail.com or join the group “Celebrating my Dad, John Stauffer” on Facebook.
While not an exact quote, a special memory of his voice reminds me to:
Sit and listen, look around...pay attention to the little things, you might just see something really neat!
